Johann Pachelbel was born in late August or early September 1653. He was baptized on the first of September and may have been born that same day.His father was an impoverished wine merchant who had a total of fourteen children by two different marriages. The family’s poverty prevented an organized education. Early lessons were given by H. Schwemmer, the music director of the town of Nurnberg. After studying in a variety of other institutions, he was accepted at the Regensburg Protestant High School for Humanities in 1670. He simultaneously served as organist for the institution and studied with K. Prentz. In 1674, perhaps at the suggestion of Prentz, Pachelbel went to Vienna, probably for further studies. In 1678, he became the organist at Erfurt. In 1681, he married Barbara Gabler, but two years later she and their infant died of bubonic plague. He had two daughters and five sons by his second marriage. Three of the sons became musical instrument makers, and one, Carl Theodorus, immigrated to the United States, between 1690 and 1692 Johann served as court musician and organist for Duchess Magdelena Sibylla of Wurttemberg but fled to Nurnberg in 1692 to avoid the French invasion. He died there in 1706.
